During this time of year, warmer climates are experiencing flooding season. In North Dakota we still have blizzard warnings. We've had several this winter. Most of them turned out to be nothing. Even on the really bad storm days, people were still out and about helping a neighbor shovel or delivering cookies or a meal to a friend. Life pretty much continues as normal with maybe a few inconveniences at the most.
This week’s storm warning was no different. About three days ago we started to get warnings that a blizzard is on its way. Last night, school was called off in anticipation of the coming storm. I watched out the window for a long time last night. The sky was clear… not a snowflake was anywhere to be seen. The wind was barely blowing and I thought to myself, “I doubt anything will come of this warning, just like many of the others”. That’s the way a lot of people think about Jesus coming again.
II Peter 3:3-4 “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” It may seem like life is continuing as normal, but the reality is, every moment - is a moment closer to Jesus coming again. The warning signs all around us may seem so small they barely affect us at all. In fact, we may not even see them as warnings. When reading II Timothy 3:1-5, some may casually think, awww, this is just the way things are these days. People in general are getting worse and life is getting harder. But these verses are given to us as warnings! Look at these verses again…
II Timothy 3:1-5 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy. Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good. Traitors, heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
This sure describes our world today, doesn’t it? Just watch the news for a few minutes. We have road rage, crooked politicians, children killing their parents, parents killing each other, countries at war over broken promises, preachers being shot and killed in the pulpit and so called Hollywood "royalty" receiving awards for the garbage produced in the movies they sell to the masses.
These verses are just some of the warning signs God has given to us in His Word. And... today is the day to heed them. Now is the time to take seriously the warnings. Don’t wait until judgment is upon us to heed the warning given.
II Corinthians 6:2 “For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succored thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is day of salvation.”
Christians are given particular warnings about how we ought to be living while waiting for the Lord’s return.
II Peter 3:11 “Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness.” Verse 14 “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”
Mark 13:33 “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” Verse 36-37 “ Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. (That would be such a shame.) And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”
Luke 21:28 "And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”
After I thought about these things while looking out the window last night and watching for the predicted storm; I looked around at my children and said, “It may not seem like anything is happening right now but we need to get things ready just in case tomorrow morning, when we wake up, we find that the weather man was right!
It won’t be long now….. Make sure you are ready...Jesus is coming again!
